Asia 1787 Antique Map Reproduction

One of four continental maps compiled by Elia Endasian and printed in Armenian at the San Lazzaro Press in Venice, this map of Asia was published in 1786–87.

The San Lazzaro Monastery, founded in 1717 by Mekhitar Sebastatsi, became a hub of Armenian scholarship and publishing. The Mekhitarist fathers produced numerous works, including maps and geographical studies.

While based on earlier Italian sources, Endasian’s map features Armenian place-names and legends. Sadly, a fire destroyed many of the Order’s records, leaving gaps in its history.
